Even if they didn't feel the implosion, I'm positive they knew something was wrong because that material would have been making a lot of stress racket right up until it failed.

the glue mightve been crap, and the way they applied it, tiny air bubbles within the glue mightve caused a strucural weakness when put under great pressure (i worked several times with similar stuff and its almost impossible to get all air out)
